The Antarctic, protagonist in a series of conferences to be held in civic centres

While the Antarctic may appear to us as a very distant continent, the changes occurring in its ecosystem may well affect our own environment. This is just one of the subjects included in a series of conferences to be held in Barcelona’s civic centres from the 30th of April to the 4th of June under the title The Antarctic, the pulsating continent. The series is an attempt to raise awareness of the tasks being undertaken by many Catalan and Spanish scientists in the region and, furthermore, will serve as a prelude to the eleventh International Biology Symposium that will take place in Barcelona next July.
 

The series will begin in the Centre Cívic Urgell with a talk given by Josefina Castellví, doctor and professor of the CSIC (the Spanish National Research Council), regarding the beginnings of the Spanish involvement in Antarctic research, and will end with a conference dealing with the ice cap that covers the continent in the Centre Cívic La Sadeta. The talks will cover a variety of aspects of the region, such as the fauna, the ecological impact of tourism and the discoveries made by explorers.
 

Other civic centres hosting the series are those of Can Basté, Casa Orlandai, Can Deu, Cotxeres de Sants, Navas, Guinardó, Parc Sandaru and La Barceloneta.
