The author will be presented with the BCNegra prize on Thursday the 5th of February in a ceremony in the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona City Council
As part of the 10th edition of BCNegra, author Alicia Giménez Bartlett, born in Albacete in 1951 and resident in Barcelona since 1975, will be presented with the Pepe Carvalho Award, established in memory of Manuel Vázquez Montalbán.
A jury consisting of Jordi Canal, Andreu Martín, Rosa Mora, Daniel Vázquez Sallés, Sergio Vila-Sanjuán and Paco Camarasa unanimously decided to present the award to the author of novels the likes of Death Rites, Dog Day and A Boat Laden with Rice "for having revitalised the Spanish detective novel by offering a female and feminist perspective, making her a pioneer in the field.”
The author of Secret Penelope, Days of Love and Deception and Where Nobody can Find You has published ten novels starring Inspector Petra Delicado and Deputy Inspector Fermín Garzón, a series that has made Giménez Bartlett one of the most translated, widely read and award-winning Spanish authors in the world, achieving a level of recognition exclusive to classic writers in the genre.
Inspector Petra Delicado is now one of the best-loved characters in detective fiction. Warm and genuine, she is the first policewoman of the genre to be penned by a female author and, with the passage of time, has had to evolve in parallel with changes in society. As a result, in her first cases, she refers to pesetas, while her later adventures involve a world of euros and mobile phones.
This year, book publishers Destino will release the tenth volume in the series, entitled Crimes I Will Never Forget – a new volume of stories in which the clever inspector investigates nine complex and sordid crimes with the help of her inseparable companion.
On Thursday the 5th of February Alicia Giménez Bartlett will receive an award that, on previous occasions, has been presented to the likes of Andrea Camilleri, Andreu Martín, Michael Connelly and P.D. James, among others.
