Anita Zengeza

Folk music from Africa with Anita Zengeza

This Barcelona-based singer-songwriter, who was born in Botswana, is appearing at different civic centers in the city as part of the Barcelona Cultural District cycle.

The story of singer-songwriter Anita Zengeza is full of twists and turns, but luckily it does have a happy ending. She was born in Botswana and raised in Zimbabwe, where she lived until, as a teenager, she took advantage of a scholarship to go to study in Europe. After a stay in Italy, she arrived in Barcelona in 2010 and studied at the Conservatori del Liceu, where she specialized in jazz and modern music. With her musical training completed, she took the logical next step and went out into the world to record and promote her music, an eclectic brew replete with aromas of jazz, blues, folk and African music.

Anita is the star of this year's Barcelona Districte Cultural program, a series of concerts at civic centers that aims to showcase the city's musical wealth. So far, she has released two albums, Anita Zengeza (2013) and Natural Journey (2016), and we will be able to hear her songs at Casal Font d'en Fargues (23 February at 9.30pm). In March there will be two more dates, at El Coll (March 11) and at Centre Cívic Albareda (March 16).
