“25%. Catalonia at Venice” and “Martin Parr. The Non-Conformists” at the Virreina Image Centre
These two widely-contrasting exhibitions can be seen in the centre up until the 28th of September
August and September are the final two months for visitors to the Virreina Image Centre to enjoy two widely-contrasting exhibitions: 25% Catalonia at Venice and Martin Parr. The Non-conformists. The first of these presents the exhibition which represented Catalonia at the 55th edition of the Biennale de Venezia and reflects on the current unemployment situation facing Catalonia (25% refers to the unemployment figure). The exhibition consists of eight unemployed individuals who reflect on the role played by art and select both a personal object that is of value to them and a work of art from the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, MACBA. Curated by Jordi Balló, the individuals are photographed and recorded by visual artist Francesc Torres and film maker Mercedes Álvarez.
Martin Parr. The Non-conformists, on the other hand, presents a very different historical context, namely that of West Yorkshire villages during the 1970s. Via 75 black and white photographs the British photographer portrays a traditional way of life that was in decline at the time.
Both exhibitions can be seen in the Virreina Image Centre up until the 28th of September. The centre opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 12 pm to 8 pm and entry is free. More information is available here.
