23rd International Women's Film Festival of Barcelona

The programme began at the end of April and has been extended up until the 7th of July, offering a women's perspective through the screening of audiovisual works by internationally recognised women film makers

The programme for the 23rd International Women's Film Festival of Barcelona began on the 27th of April in the La Bonne theatre of the Francesca Bonnemaison Women's Culture Centre with the screening of Adele Tulli's film Rebel Menopause. Since then numerous venues around the city have participated in a programme designed to share the legacy of international women filmmakers on the formal evolution of audiovisual languages and narratives.

The Festival is presented in a variety of formats. For example, on the Plaça de la Virreina, the Plaça de Salvador and the Plaça Sant Pere de la Ribera, on the 7th, 9th and 11th of June respectively, visitors will have a chance to see works by the likes of María Cañas, Carolina Astudillo, Elia Urquiza and Diana Toucedo as well as the feature-length film A girl walks home at night, by Ana Lily Amirpour. On the 18th of June the Plaça Sant Pere will host a series of short films entitled Cortos en Femenino 2014.

From the 10th to the 16th of June the Filmoteca will offer a specially-designed programme that will pay tribute to Soviet women filmmakers Olga Preobrazhenskaja, Julia Solntseva and Sfir Shub and feature a retrospective on the work of Helena Lumbreras.

On the 26th and 27th of May the SGAE will host round-table discussions entitled Fiction and Documentary and Television and new formats, featuring Carmen Abarca, Neus Ballús, Yolanda Barrasa, Elisabet Cabeza, Mar Coll, Anaïs Schaaff, Carla Subirana, Valentina Viso and Virginia Yagüe.

These and other activities make up the programme for a women's festival that began more than twenty years ago and, thanks to the collaboration this year of Drac Màgic Cultura Audiovisual and the cultural association Trentacinc, up until the 7th of July offers an opportunity to explore the audiovisual work of a selection of international women filmmakers.
