20th edition of the Butaca Awards for Catalan theatre

The awards ceremony will take place on Monday the 24th of November at 9.30 pm in the Teatre Principal and will be screened live both via the web and onTelevisions Locals

The Butaca Awards were created in 1995 with the aim of presenting awards that have been bestowed exclusively by the general public, and for two decades the competition has served as a cultural platform for the dissemination and promotion of Catalan theatre. The voting system operates via a commission of spectators who are obliged to comply with a couple of requisites: to have seen more than thirty-six theatrical productions over the course of the season, and not to have any direct or indirect relationship with the world of the performing arts.

This year’s awards include nineteen categories, in addition to the Anna Lizaran Honorary Award, which will be presented this year to actress Rosa Novell. The production with the most nominations, seven, is Un aire de família, directed by Pau Durà, which is followed, with six nominations each, by El caballero de Olmedo, presented by Lluís Pasqual in the Teatre Lliure, L’orfe del clan dels Zhao, by the theatre company La Perla 29, Informe per a una Acadèmia, directed by Xavier Ricart and Ivan Benet, and Doña Rositala soltera, o el lenguaje de las flores, presented by Joan Ollé in the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya - a total of thirty productions and eighty professionals from the world of theatre have received nominations.

The awards ceremony will be held on Monday the 24th of November at 9.30 pm in the Teatre Principal and will be compered, as with every edition, by the directors of the Butaca Awards, Glòria Cid and Toni Martín. The event can also be followed live throughout Catalonia on La Xarxa Local Televisions channels, via streaming, and also via the Butaca website.
