The 17th edition of Mecal Pro gets underway

From the 11th of March to the 19th of April, with Sweden as guest country, the International Animation and Short Film Festival of Barcelona will screen 350 short films in numerous venues throughout the city

Mecal Pro - the International Animation and Short Film Festival of Barcelona - celebrates its 17th edition from the 11th of March to the 19th of April. This year’s festival, now considered both a national and international reference point for festivals of this type, will feature 350 short films from 35 countries, divided into 4 official and 20-or-so parallel sections. With Sweden as guest country, Mecal will be hosted by such cultural venues as the CCCB, the Institut Francès de Barcelona, the Fàbrica Moritz, the Arts Santa Mònica and the Cinemes Girona.

The 4 official sections are, as usual, International, Oblique, Documentary and Animation, the first hosting the best in short film from around the world, the second hosting the more risqué titles, the third dedicated solely to non-fiction and the fourth focussing on the possibilities of animated film. Highlights among the parallel sections include short films nominated for the latest edition of the BAFTA Awards for British Cinema and a special selection of central European films from the BuSho Film Festival of Budapest.

As always, Mecal will continue with its topical sessions, such as the now habitual and popular specials featuring sex and horror, the Womart session, featuring short films directed by women, the sessions dedicated to Catalan Talents and Spanish Talents, a Special Robot session, a TrashAnim session, dedicated to underground animation, and a video-dance special, among others. This year’s festival will also incorporate a Space is the Place session, featuring films about, you guessed it, space. Highlights among the available parallel activities include a conference given by French film maker Bertrand Bonello and featuring a retrospective on his short films.

Another key element of Mecal is the International Short Film Market, which consolidates its status as a meeting place for film industry professionals with one-to-one meetings, a variety of activities and viewing spaces and a wide range of conferences and pitchings for animation projects.
