Every Thursday, the Verdi cinema offers the Essential Thursdays sessions, a cycle of rediscovery that brings us iconic films from the history of cinema.

On Thursday 4 May audiences can see the film Tokyo Story, directed by Yasujirô Ozu in 1953. Considered one of the leading twentieth-century film-makers, Ozu influenced directors such as Jim Jarmusch and Wim Wenders.

The version of Tokyo Story screened is the one that was restored by its production company, Shochiku, using the original negative which had its world première at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.

The film tells how Shukichi and Tomi Hirayama, an elderly couple, are getting ready to travel from Onomichi to Osaka and Tokyo to visit their children. Once in the capital, the presence of the elderly couple is an inconvenience for their family. Since their children are very busy, it falls to their daughter-in-law, Noriko, to look after them. After their children have sent them to the spa at Atami, the elderly couple decide to return to Onomichi, but just then Tomi faints.
