On Tuesday 24 October, Doctor Jules Hoffmann, Nobel Prize Winner for Medicine in 2011, together with Bruce A. Beutler and Ralph M. Steinman, will be giving the lecture entitled Innate Immunity: from Flies to Humans at the CosmoCaixa.

Dr Hoffmann and his colleagues have been awarded this prize for their research and discoveries regarding the immune system, which has opened up new avenues to develop prevention and treatments to fight against infections, illnesses and tumours. They have shown that the immune system has two lines of defence against invasive micro-organisms and have revealed how innate immunity works. The lecture by Dr Hoffmann at the CosmoCaixa will illustrate the progress in this field from a phylogenetic perspective.
