To mark the centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), the Liceu is premièring one of the composer's most iconic titles on 18 October, the operetta Candide, based on the philosophical novel by Voltaire.
Candide is a work rewritten by the composer to adapt it to formats closer to musical comedy. Bernstein proposed a fresh, spontaneous and occasionally parodic score with eighteenth-century airs and always with an undeniable musical wisdom.
Soprano Meghan Picerno makes her début at the Liceu in the role of Cunegonde, one of the most committed for a light lyric soprano for the coloratura in the celebrated aria Glitter and Be Gay.
Bernstein’s opera is being performed in concert version under the baton of John DeMain, with the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
