Samaris

When Jófríður Ákadóttir, aka JFDR (vocals), Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir (clarinet) and Þórður Kári Steinþórsson (electronics) formed Samaris in 2011, they were just teenagers. Since then, they have become one of the most internationally-acclaimed Icelandic groups. This, despite the fact that their homonymous debut album, with its glacial, phantasmagorical electronica sound, played over a steady beat, was accompanied by lyrics taken from nineteenth-century poems in Icelandic. This time round, though, the band return to Barcelona to present Black Lights (2016), their third album and the first with all the lyrics in English, though the evocative power of their music is undimmed. Samaris are playing BAM as one of the bands from Reykjavík, this year’s guest city.
