RAY BLK

She won Music Sound 2017, the annual poll organised by the BBC to predict the artists that will break through each year, following in the footsteps of Adele, Haim and Michael Kiwanuka, among many others. She was born in Nigeria 23 years ago and grew up in south London. The name on her passport is Rita Ekwere, her stage surname BLK stands for Building, Living, Knowing, which she describes as her three main values, and she says she wants to connect to fans through her lyrics. The main influences in her music, which fuses hip-hop and R&B, include Missy Elliott, Lil Kim and The Notorious B.I.G., and some have already dubbed her “the Lauryn Hill of the UK”. We can hear her on The Apprentice, a track on the new Gorillaz album, and on self-released numbers like My Hood (featuring Stormzy) and Doing Me, two brilliant introductions to this rising star.
