Nilüfer Yanya

R&B soul pop

Nilüfer Yanya

She is 22 years old, and has Turkish, Irish and Barbadian blood. Her name, Nilüfer, means “water lily” in Turkish. She grew up listening to Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse and the Pixies, and everyone agrees that she is a fast-rising British talent, one to watch. Something about her reminds us of Kate Tempest (the London accent? The thick curly hair?), but Nilüfer Yanya is not an MC and she does not rap: with no apparent effort, she uses her deep, rangy voice to serve up a melodic fusion of R&B, soul, pop (that emptiness that we first fell in love with when listening to early The xx) and jazz, though she insists that she is “a musician first and a singer last”. To date, she has released two EPs, Small Crimes (2016) and Plant Feed (2017), their tracks a seamless fusion of cool, contemporary sounds and catchy pop tunes.
