Marika Hackman

Marika Hackman

She didn’t want to be Joni Mitchell: she wanted to have a band like Nirvana. But things don’t always turn out as well as we would like, at least at first, and Marika Hackman found herself playing the guitar and supporting Laura Marling. She didn’t want to be a model either, but her friendship with the top model Cara Delevigne helped her to become the image of Burberry. Now, this British singer-songwriter, at the age of 25, has got closer to where she really wants her career to go: she no longer does adverts, and she has signed for Sub Pop, the label that discovered Kurt Cobain’s band. What is more, her second album, I’m Not Your Man (2017), the follow-up to 2015’s We Slept At Last – both produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J) – brings her music closer to her beloved grunge. Leaving the flowery metaphors behind, I’m Not Your Man takes no hostages, delving deeply into subjects like sex and sexual identity from a feminine stance that kicks all the clichés into touch.
