Barcelona's selection as host city for the 25th summer Olympic Games

On 17 October 1986, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the 25th Summer Olympic Games to Barcelona at a session held in Lausanne (Switzerland).

Three votes were held, with Amsterdam being eliminated in the first round, Birmingham in the second, and Belgrade, Brisbane and Paris in the final round. The president of the IOC, Joan Antoni Samaranch then pronounced his famous words: “...to the city of... Barcelona."

The city had been a candidate for the Olympic Games on five occasions during the 20th century (1924, 1936, 1940, 1972 and 1992), and it had finally achieved its goal.
